Last season, Tony Stewart beat Jimmie Johnson by less than a second for his 29th career Nextel Cup win. Stewart, who now has 32 career wins, started eighth on the grid and led 278 laps. Pole sitter Brian Vickers led for only five laps and finished 27th.
This is the 34th race of the season, with only three races remaining in the Chase for the Cup.
Jeff Gordon has a nine-point lead over 2nd place contender, Jimmie Johnson. He has 2 wins and 7 top-10s in his last 10 starts. Johnson has eight 2007 wins and 7 top-10s in his last 10 races.
Even with just three races left on the schedule, I believe Chase drivers under 400 points out are still able to win the championship.
It won't be easy, but it's possible.
3rd on the points list, Clint Bowyer stands 111 points back, but has recorded 6 top 10s in his last 10 races, including 1 win.
In 4th place, Carl Edwards is 261 points behind Jeff Gordon, with 5 top 10s in his last 10 races, including 2 wins.
5th place driver Tony Stewart has 6 top 10s in his last 10 races. He is 322 points behind Gordon. Frustrated in 6th place is Kyle Busch, with 6 top 10s in the last 10 races. He is 328 points out of first place.
Last person on my list of drivers who still have a chance this week is Kevin Harvick. Being 392 points away from Jeff Gordon and having only 3 top 10s in the last 10 races, he just barely makes it.
Anything can happen, but I think the other drivers need a miracle at this point.
The Nextel Cup Series continues next week with the 34th race of the 36-races at Texas Motor Speedway on November 4th for the Dickies 500. Jeff Burton won the April 15 race at the track earlier this season after Gordon started from the pole position. Coverage begins at 3 p.m. Eastern.
